A standard threaded isobutane-propane canister, the screw-on kind used by backpacking stoves; it is sold separately. A 100 to 110 g canister nests inside the pot with the burner, although Fire Maple notes some wider canisters may not fit. We sell 100 g canisters from Olicamp and Primus.

The pot holds 0.8 L and has 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8 L marks inside: water for coffee, a freeze-dried meal or one serving of noodles. It is a one-person system. To use a small pan or kettle instead, fit the included stainless pot support onto the burner.

Fire Maple measures half a litre in about 1 minute 42 seconds under controlled conditions, using about 4.5 g of gas. Wind, cold air, a cold canister or icy water all add time, so expect it to take longer at camp, especially in spring and fall.

The pot's heat-exchanger base surrounds the burner, which helps in a breeze, but wind still slows it. Shelter it with your body, a pack or rocks, and never wrap a windscreen around the canister. Never cook inside a tent or vestibule: Fire Maple says outdoor use only, because of carbon monoxide.

It has no pressure regulator, so output drops as the canister gets cold. Use a four-season isobutane-propane blend, keep the canister warm in a jacket or sleeping bag until you cook, and shield it from wind and snow. Below freezing, expect slower boils and bring extra gas.

Yes. The piezo igniter is built in: open the flame regulator and press the button. Piezo igniters can fail when wet or very cold, so keep a lighter or matches in your kit as a backup.

The flame regulator turns the flame down as well as up, so you can keep soup or oatmeal at a gentle boil. The integrated pot is built mainly for boiling water quickly; for real cooking, fit the pot support and use a small pan, and stir so nothing sticks.

Hand-wash the pot with mild detergent and a soft sponge; Fire Maple says it is not dishwasher-safe, to protect the anodized finish and the heat-exchanger base. Wipe the burner head with a clean cloth, let everything dry before packing, and let the stove cool five minutes before you unscrew the canister.
