The BOA dial replaces the lower two buckles with a steel lace that pulls the shell evenly around the forefoot. Buckles clamp at two points and leave gaps between; the BOA closes the whole shell at once, which is why it makes a noticeable difference to people with a wider or a lower-volume foot.
