Description

Features

A 650-fill duck down mummy bag in four fill weights, so you buy exactly the warmth you need: SP400 for September and October, SP550 for cold sleepers and late fall, SP700 and SP1000 for winter camping and hot tents.

Key facts

  • 650FP duck down, 85% down content, 20D down-proof nylon shell
  • SP400: 400 g fill, comfort 3.8 °C, limit −1.4 °C, 0.86 kg
  • SP550: 550 g fill, 0.97 kg · SP700: 700 g fill, 1.32 kg
  • SP1000: 1000 g fill, comfort −10.8 °C, 1.72 kg
  • One size, 205 × 80 cm, fits to about 195 cm tall
  • YKK anti-pinch zipper, Duraflex buckles, compression sack included

Why this one

  • Same construction as name-brand down bags, and you pay for the fill weight you will actually use.
  • Half the weight and a third of the packed size of a cotton bag with the same rating.
  • Packs from Ø16 × 34 cm (SP400) to Ø20 × 42 cm (SP1000): every model fits in a backpack.

Good to know

Buy by the comfort rating, not the limit. Down is not machine-washable: spot-clean the shell and sleep in a liner; wash rarely with down detergent and dry with tennis balls.

FAQ

Questions & answers

Which model do I buy: SP400, SP550, SP700 or SP1000?

By the coldest night you expect. SP400 (comfort 3.8 °C, 0.86 kg) covers September and October in southern Ontario. SP550 is the safe choice for October and cold sleepers. SP700 and SP1000 are winter bags for snow camping and hot tents. All four are the same 205 × 80 cm size and the same 650FP duck down; only the amount of down changes.

Comfort or limit: which number do I go by?

Comfort. It is the temperature at which an average sleeper stays warm all night in base layers on an insulated pad. Limit is curled-up-and-coping; extreme is survival. If you sleep cold, go one model warmer than the comfort rating suggests.

Will it fit me? I'm 6'3".

205 × 80 cm, comfortable to about 195 cm tall.

How do I wash a down bag?

Rarely. Spot-clean the shell and sleep in a liner to keep the inside clean. For a full wash: down detergent, gentle cycle in a front-loader, then tumble dry low with tennis balls until completely dry.

How does it compare with other down bags?

You get 650-fill duck down at 85% down content in a 20D shell with a YKK anti-pinch zip, the same construction as name-brand down bags, and you can pick the exact fill weight instead of carrying a winter bag on an October trip. Against a cotton bag with the same rating, it is roughly half the weight and a third of the packed size.
