FAQ
An EN417 screw-on isobutane/propane canister, the same threaded can as a backpacking stove, in 100 g, 230 g or 450 g. It connects through the hose and the pressure-regulator valve, with the canister standing upright on the ground. It does not take the long butane cassette. We sell Primus Power Gas and the Olicamp four-season mix.
Both. The infrared ceramic burner puts out 1.8 kW (about 6,100 BTU). Stand it on its legs and it boils half a litre in about three and a half minutes in Fire Maple's test, longer in the cold; tip it back onto its handle, about 30 degrees, and it throws radiant heat at whoever is sitting in front of it. There is no built-in igniter, so light it with a lighter or match.
It burns about 156 g an hour at full output, so a 230 g canister gives about an hour and a half (Fire Maple quotes 90 minutes on full and 150 minutes on half power), a 450 g just under three hours and a 100 g about 40 minutes.
No. Use it outdoors only, in a well-ventilated spot. It burns oxygen and gives off carbon monoxide, so never run it in a tent, ice hut, camper, vehicle or any other enclosed space, and never while you sleep. It has no flame-failure cut-off, so never leave it burning unattended.
The burner is a flameless infrared ceramic plate, so a breeze will not blow it out the way it does an open flame, and the pressure-regulator valve keeps output steadier as the canister cools. This original model has no reflector panels (the Sunflower X adds four), so set it out of the wind to keep the heat on you. Below freezing use an isobutane/propane mix such as the Olicamp four-season canister, not pure butane, and keep the spare in a pocket.
The 1/4-inch thread on the back fits any camera tripod, so you can raise the heater to chest height and aim it at your chair or the fishing hole instead of heating the ground.
818 g, and it folds to 16.5 x 11.5 x 8.3 cm; open it measures 18 x 16.7 x 12.5 cm. It comes in a hard carry case and sets up without tools.
Yes to both. Pick up at Richmond Hill, Newmarket or Ottawa when it is in stock there, with canisters from the same shelf. Unused stoves in original packaging can be returned within 14 days; items discounted more than 39% are final sale.
