A 400 g closed-cell foam egg-nest mat with an aluminum film: three-season ground insulation under a sleeping bag, an insulating layer under an air bed, or a sit pad. It cannot puncture and never needs inflating. Single or Double.

Questions & answers

What is it for?

Three-season ground insulation under a sleeping bag, a layer under an air bed to stop the cold coming up, or a sit pad. 185 × 56 cm single; the 200 × 120 cm double is for two.

What does R 1.8 mean?

Enough insulation for spring to fall ground on its own. For October and under an air bed, choose the thicker R 2.5 version or stack two.

Foil side up or down?

Foil up, toward you: it reflects body heat back and keeps the foam dry.

How does it pack?

Accordion fold to 56 × 15 × 13 cm, 400 g. It rides outside a backpack under the straps.

How does it compare with an inflatable pad?

It cannot puncture and needs no inflating. An inflatable pad is thicker and more comfortable for side sleepers. Most backpackers carry this under the inflatable for insurance.
