You don't need to drive to Algonquin for a good weekend outside. These five parks are all roughly 45–90 minutes from Richmond Hill, take online reservations, and work for first-timers and families alike.
1. Sibbald Point Provincial Park — ~45 min
On the south shore of Lake Simcoe near Jackson's Point. Big car-camping campground, sandy beach, easy swimming. It books up fast on summer weekends — reserve early through Ontario Parks.
2. Darlington Provincial Park — ~50 min
East along the 401 near Bowmanville, with campsites close to the Lake Ontario waterfront and gentle walking trails. A quiet option when Simcoe parks are full.
3. Albion Hills Conservation Park — ~50 min
A conservation-area campground in the Caledon hills with a large trail network — a favourite if someone in your group rides mountain bikes.
4. Earl Rowe Provincial Park — ~1 hr
Near Alliston. A classic family park: open campsites, a swimming area and flat, easy terrain for kids' bikes.
5. Bronte Creek Provincial Park — ~1 hr
In Oakville on a ravine above the creek. Well set up for families, and close enough to the city that you can bail out of a rainy Sunday in half an hour.
